Why 365?

Day one, and WHY:

Today, January 2 of 2012, I’ve decided to begin a 365-day journey. The inspiration came from a friend that I met this past summer on a study abroad trip to Spain. I hope to capture moments from every day of the year by picture and or text, and be able to look back on them and remember exactly how I felt that day. It just seems like a fun way to watch my life progress and keep up with the year. I figure what better time to start than just as a new year has begun? A new chapter in my life.

At right about this time, nearly everyone begins making resolutions. Some want to exercise more, some want to spend less, some would like to spend more time with family… While I do have a few things I’d like to be done throughout the year, I also am aware that nine times out of ten (I just made that statistic up, but it sounds about right!) new years resolutions are forgotten by the end of the first month, if they even make it that far. I would like to think of my list of items as more of a list of goals. Written down goals so that I may be able to look over them weekly to remind myself to continue with the GOALS, not just “new years resolutions.”

I would like to spend the year…

improving myself- mentally and physically.

opening my mind.

not only making lists, but actually complete the tasks on them.

finding a new job, so that I can start saving.

keeping myself better updated with current events.

finding something to be passionate about.

facebooking less… exponentially less.

getting involved with a program that helps to make a difference such as It Gets Better, a suicide prevention hotline, or possibly a LGBT community program…

learning and practicing more photography.

FINALLY declaring a major!

I’m sure there are other things that will run across my mind later, so I’ll just add those to the list as I think of them.

I partially want to write this blog so that I can prove to myself that, yes, I actually can follow something from start to finish; partially to have some peace of mind at the end of each day by letting things out. Partially to open myself up more, because I have a tendency to run from things and moments that make me feel vulnerable, because quite honestly they scare the living daylights out of me. I know everyone experiences these moments in their lives, but we really shouldn’t run from them, because these are the moments that we learn the most about ourselves. Those, and the aftermaths, where we are forced to be and stay strong so that we may get past the moments and grow from them.

Joan Didion said,“I write entirely to find out what I’m thinking, what I’m looking at, what I see and what it means. What I want and what I fear.” These are the perfect words to help describe my reasoning for desiring to start such a long-term and challenging task. Hopefully I will learn more about myself by actually taking the time out of my day to stop and listen to my million-mile-an-hour-thoughts.

And I also partially am beginning this blog because quite honestly I’ve always wanted to start a 365 day blog, but never had the right mindset until now. There was always an excuse. I’ve realized over the past few months though, that excuses are a simple out… but if something is important enough to you, you WILL make time for it. So here we go. Day one out of 365. And I am so absolutely excited!!
